“Promoting tolerance, inclusion, unity and respect for diversity—these are the themes of this year’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. They also are the themes of a diverse, inclusive and welcoming Alberta.

“Albertans recognize that our communities, our economy and our culture are richer and stronger because of our diversity. Our peaceful coexistence has no room for racial hatred. Where discrimination does occur, communities, organizations and the Alberta government are taking action on racism by building awareness and working to promote acceptance, inclusion, unity and mutual respect.

“Our government has met with community organizations around the province to hear their stories, concerns and ideas for how we can better work together to make Alberta more inclusive, safe and welcoming. We are working to find new ways our education system can more actively help people understand why our differences should be celebrated, not attacked.

“This day had its roots in tragedy. On this day 58 years ago, in 1960, 69 South Africans died from gunfire at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid. Six years later, the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.

“As Albertans, let’s rededicate ourselves to that ideal, and make a personal commitment to stand up for the human rights of all Albertans. It matters how we treat each other. Together, we can make Alberta a beacon of acceptance and respect to the rest of the world. And let’s plan to renew that commitment in December, as the world celebrates 70 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”
