“Every Dec. 1 for 28 years, Albertans have stood with the world to remember the victims of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome -those who are living with HIV and AIDS, and those who have died.

“Fortunately, HIV and AIDS are no longer the death sentence they were. Many are living long and full lives, but there is no cure - yet. And, sadly, too many of those living with HIV and AIDS also live with stigma, isolation and misunderstanding.

“We have the power to change that, by showing the same acceptance, care and support we show those with any other chronic, manageable disease. We can embrace people affected by the illness, and keep them part of our lives.

“I invite all Albertans to wear a red ribbon on this day to show that, as individuals and as a society, we care for everyone living with HIV and AIDS, we mourn with those who lost loved ones and, we join the world in searching for a cure and in fighting stigma, misinformation and fear.”
