The Alberta opportunity

With some of the world’s largest oil and gas reserves and the lowest taxes in Canada, the province of Alberta is an innovative leader in responsible energy development, emissions reduction, clean technology and value-added agriculture. Located in Western Canada, Alberta is home to some of the world’s most livable cities with a young, educated, innovative, entrepreneurial and diverse population, a burgeoning tech sector and one of the most business-friendly climates in North America.

Alberta’s mission to Indonesia

As part of the mission to Indonesia, the Government of Alberta will discuss shared priorities in energy, agriculture, technology and infrastructure.

Alberta will support Alberta-based companies in business-to-business meetings and networking events. The government will also meet with officials and industry representatives and connect with companies interested in investing in the province.

Alberta’s robust energy sector presents opportunities for collaboration with Indonesia in the areas of energy exploration and the energy transition. Alberta’s strengths in agriculture, food processing, technology and infrastructure can support Indonesia in continuing to build its economy.

Alberta's oil sands have the fourth-largest proven oil reserves in the world, with reserves equal to about 157.6 billion barrels.

There is strong interest in Indonesia in using carbon capture, utilization and storage technologies and there is an opportunity to export Alberta technologies and knowledge to Indonesia.

  • Agriculture and agri-foods

In 2023, the top Alberta commodity exported to Indonesia was wheat, comprising 74.7% of total Alberta exports to Indonesia.

Indonesia has a rapidly growing middle class with an expanding food service industry and demand for packaged food. Alberta is working with Indonesia to explore increased trade in blood and bone meal from beef cattle.

  • Technology, artificial intelligence and life sciences

Alberta is an internationally recognized technology and innovation hub that develops and attracts talent, business and investment to grow these sectors and diversify Alberta’s economy.

  • Infrastructure

A large population and robust domestic demand in Indonesia are anticipated to result in economic growth in the Indonesian infrastructure sector.
