The Alberta opportunity
With some of the world’s largest oil and gas reserves and the lowest taxes in Canada, the province of Alberta is an innovative leader in responsible energy development, emissions reduction and clean technology. Located in Western Canada, Alberta is home to some of the world’s most livable cities with a young, educated, innovative, entrepreneurial and diverse population, a burgeoning tech sector and one of the most business-friendly climates in North America.
Alberta’s mission to Germany
As part of the mission to Germany, the Government of Alberta will discuss shared priorities in energy, cleantech, technology, advanced manufacturing and tourism.
Alberta will support Alberta-based companies in business-to-business meetings and networking events. The government will also meet with officials and industry representatives and connect with companies interested in investing in the province.
Key areas of focus at Hannover Messe include hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, renewable energy, critical minerals and artificial intelligence. Participating in this event will raise Alberta’s profile in Germany and across Europe and showcase Alberta businesses and academic institutions offering leading-edge technologies to the world.

Trade with Alberta
As Europe’s largest economy and most populous region, Germany is a key player within the continent and a market with significant potential for Alberta companies.
The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) established in 2017 between Canada and the European Union (EU) has benefited both Canada and Germany since 2017; Germany formally ratified the agreement on January 20, 2023. CETA offers significant benefits for trade between Alberta and the EU, including duty free trade for advanced manufacturing, forestry and most agriculture and agri-food products. CETA opens up new opportunities for Alberta in the EU including duty-free, quota-free access for non-crude petroleum products as well as machinery and equipment, and preferential access for Alberta energy companies to provide technical and advisory services. For in-depth information about CETA and how to make the most of opportunities available for your business through the agreement, and get access to resources that will smooth your path to this lucrative market, visit Global Affairs Canada’s Doing Business in the European Union.
In 2024, Alberta sold $94.9 million worth of goods to Germany. The main products exported were canola ($11.1 million), carbon and carbon products ($9.9 million), radio navigation equipment ($8.8 million), packaged pet food ($8.5 million) and aerials and reflectors ($7.2 million).
Alberta bought $770 million worth of goods from Germany in 2024. The top imports were parts for cranes and work trucks ($27.3 million), measuring instrument parts ($16.3 million), gas turbine components ($16.3 million), gears, speed changers and torque converters ($13.5 million) and control panels ($12.6 million).
There are emerging opportunities in information and communication technology, health care and life sciences, aerospace and defense, bioenergy and machinery and equipment that Alberta and Germany can further explore to enhance their bilateral trade relationship.
