Wellness Mandate

June 4, 2012

Honourable Dave Rodney
Associate Minister of Wellness
418 Legislature Building
10800 - 97 Avenue
Edmonton, AB T5K 2B6

Dear Associate Minister Rodney:

Albertans have given this government a mandate for change. They expect us to deliver on a bold agenda. In doing this, there are some specific areas that require dedicated effort and focus. In your role as Associate Minister of Wellness,
I expect you to assist the Minister of Health in discharging his responsibilities related to wellness.

Reporting to the Minister of Health, and working closely with your Cabinet colleagues, you will champion the Ministry's actions to enhance wellness and achieve improved health outcomes, specifically through:

  • The promotion of healthy lifestyles, including increased health promotion and disease prevention;
  • The promotion of healthy choices for children, such as healthier eating, and increased physical activity in the K-12 school system using a "school health" approach; and
  • The implementation of a $500 children's physical activity tax credit.

In carrying out your duties, I expect you to actively engage Albertans in a dialogue on the actions government is taking and on the opportunities and challenges they face, as individuals and communities, in strengthening wellness.

Yours truly,
