Albertans inducted into 4-H Hall of Fame

Dorothy Carlson from Cherhill and Sherry Howey from Valleyview are the 82^nd and 83^rd inductees into Alberta’s 4-H Hall of Fame.

“This year’s 4-H Hall of Fame inductees exemplify the selflessness and dedication of 4-H volunteers, and stand as an example of how generations of Albertans continue to value and contribute to the 4-H program in our province. It is an honour to welcome them into Alberta’s 4-H Hall of Fame.”

The 4-H Hall of Fame recognizes exceptional 4-H leaders for their exemplary service, mentorship and volunteerism in their communities. Candidates are nominated by their 4-H peers and are evaluated based on their demonstrated leadership qualities, community references and contributions to 4-H, agriculture and their local communities.

Set to celebrate its centennial in 2017, 4-H Alberta is the largest youth organization in the province with more than 250,000 alumni. The program teaches leadership, communication and agricultural skills through fun, hands-on experiences.

November is 4-H Month, and 4-H Clubs celebrate “Show Your Colours Day” on November 4, wearing green to raise awareness.

Biographies

Dorothy Carlson

Dorothy Carlson of Cherhill became involved in the 4-H program as a 4-H parent and has never looked back. She is a constant promoter of teamwork, and her inspiring leadership and her continuing mentorship of youth has allowed 4-H members from her club to grow and develop into strong community leaders. Dorothy gives her time selflessly to 4-H, and through her dedication and commitment, ensures that others around her feel valued and special. Dorothy has been a 4-H Leader and volunteer for nearly 20 years at the club, district and provincial levels of 4-H. She has held numerous positions such as Regional Council President and Northwest Director, and has been a member of numerous committees such as the Beef Advisory Committee and Centennial Celebrations Committee. Dorothy is also an amazing contributor to her community through the Legion, Family and Community Support Services and other community organizations and events.

Sherry Howey

Sherry Howey of Valleyview joined 4-H as a youth member and quickly developed skills as a competent and inspiring speaker. As an adult she continues to use these skills as an educator and as a promoter of 4-H, encouraging youth to continue to learn by doing. As a 4-H Leader and volunteer for over 15 years, Sherry has been involved in 4-H at the district, regional and provincial levels. She has held such positions as District Council President and Peace Region Director, and has been a member of numerous committees and event teams including the Communications Committee and Leaders’ Conference Committee. As an exceptional organizer, Sherry has made many outstanding contributions to both 4-H and her community. Her community involvement is extensive through the local swim, gymnastics, dance and figure skating clubs as well as involvement with the Town Council and Youth Steering Committee.
