Family Violence Prevention Month began in 1986 as a community initiative in Hinton, Alberta. A group of concerned citizens formed the Hinton Society for the Prevention of Family Violence and launched a domestic violence and education campaign. This grassroots effort spurred the Alberta Legislature to designate every November as Family Violence Prevention Month.
