Minister McQueen reminds Albertans to keep fire safety in mind this holiday season

L-R: Fire Commissioner of Alberta Trent West, Minister of Municipal Affairs Diana McQueen, and Edmonton Fire Chief Ken Block demonstrate the importance of fire safety this holiday season

“The holiday season can be a wonderful time of year, when family and friends gather, but it is also a busy time when fire safety is not always front of mind. I would ask that all Albertans take the steps needed over the holiday season that will help keep their family safe.”

Diana McQueen, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister responsible for the Office of the Fire Commissioner

If you have a real Christmas tree in your house or apartment, it’s important to keep it moist. If a tree is too dry, it can pose a serious fire hazard.

Make sure you have a working smoke alarm on every level of the house.

In case of a fire, make sure everyone knows how to get out safely. Develop and practice a home fire escape plan with all members of the household. Once out of the house, stay outside and call 911 from a cell phone or a neighbour’s house.

"The magic of the upcoming festive season is undeniable and a unique time for family and loved ones to come together to celebrate. Typically during the holidays, Edmonton Fire Rescue responds to a higher number of incidents, so please take extra care to use good fire safety practices to ensure the most safe and enjoyable Christmas."

Fire Chief Ken Block, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services

Tips for a fire-safe holiday

  1. Never leave cooking unattended.
  2. Never throw water on a grease fire – use a fire extinguisher or baking soda on a shallow grease fire.
  3. Never turn on an overhead fan with a cooking fire, as it could cause the fire to spread.
  4. Install at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home - test it monthly, change the battery yearly, and replace it every 10 years.
  5. Water natural Christmas trees daily.
  6. Don’t overload electrical outlets.
  7. Never leave candles unattended.
  8. Stub cigarettes out completely and dispose of them safely.
  9. Keep flammable materials such as curtains and furniture at least one metre away from space heaters.
  10. Store matches and lighters in a child-proof drawer or cabinet.
  11. Create and practice a fire escape plan with your whole family. Get out, stay out and call 911.
