This release was issued under a previous government.

“Alberta is a great place to do business but we need to do better if we want to have the best climate for small business in North America. Our new Small Business Strategy will save small businesses time, give them better access to business advice and government information, and provide them a stronger voice with government.”

Jim Prentice, Premier

A new streamlined website provides small businesses a one-stop shop for government services information at smallbusiness.alberta.ca, while a new business adviser service at The Business Link will help small businesses easily navigate government’s business programs, supports and regulatory information.

“This strategy reflects what we heard from small businesses. We are committed to working with entrepreneurs, businesses, and partners to deliver on the strategy’s directions.”

Don Scott, Minister of Innovation and Advanced Education

The strategy will see small business owners and entrepreneurs meet with government leaders at semi-annual roundtables.

“We are pleased to work with the Alberta government and other business stakeholders to host semi-annual roundtables that will support formal and regular engagement with small businesses. This will enhance Alberta small businesses’ strong and meaningful voice.”

Ken Kobly, President and CEO, Alberta Chambers of Commerce

“We’re thrilled to see the Small Business Strategy come to fruition, including key aspects like the business adviser role and streamlined website. We need to continue to work together to ensure Alberta remains one of the best places to run a small business, and with this new strategy, we’re on a roll.”

Richard Truscott, Director, Canadian Federation of Independent Business

Previously, businesses sometimes had to interact with multiple ministries on their inquiries regarding regulatory requirements. Now, business advisers at The Business Link will be able to provide well-rounded perspectives and pull in required information from across the provincial government. This dedicated support will help reduce red tape and run-arounds so small businesses can get the answers they need when they need them.

The Business Link, supported by the provincial and federal government, is a primary small business and entrepreneur service centre in Alberta. Small businesses can access the business adviser service toll free at 1-844-422-7705 or via the “Ask An Expert” button on smallbusiness.alberta.ca.

Building On Our Entrepreneurial Spirit: A Small Business Strategy For Alberta supports Alberta’s recently released Economic Development Framework. The Framework will strengthen and broaden the Alberta economy and build resilience to boom-and-bust economic cycles.

Small businesses contribute more than 25 per cent of Alberta’s Gross Domestic Product and make up 95 per cent of all businesses in Alberta.  In Alberta, a small business is defined as a business with 50 employees or less.
