“On behalf of the Government of Alberta and all Albertans, I am honoured to join the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund, the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Foundation and fellow Canadians as we remember the victims impacted by Canada’s first national internment operations during the First World War.

“Today’s historical unveiling of 100 plaques across Canada in remembrance of the 100th anniversary of The War Measures Act includes 17 plaques in Alberta and marks an important step in honouring the memories of Ukrainians and others who suffered as a result of this appalling chapter in our national history.

“Alberta is home to a strong and vibrant Ukrainian community that has played an integral role in helping us to shape and define our province. The CTO project is a valuable opportunity for us to stand in solidarity with our Ukrainian community.

“I encourage Albertans to remember those impacted by The War Measures Act and solemnly reflect on our past so that we can better understand and appreciate what we now value most – a strong, free and bright future for everyone.”
