“I am greatly disappointed that council did not approve the land use amendment necessary for the development and sale of land in Parsons Creek Stage 2.

“Moving forward in Parsons Creek is crucial to encourage much needed residential, commercial and infrastructure development in Fort McMurray. I am deeply concerned that council’s decision jeopardizes the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Land Exchange Agreement between the Alberta government and the municipality.

“This innovative agreement, signed earlier this year, would transfer provincially-owned land on Saline Creek Plateau and Parsons Creek, valued at approximately $131.8 million, to Wood Buffalo for re-sale and provide much-needed opportunities for increased residential, commercial and institutional development, such as schools and health facilities, for approximately 44,000 residents. In addition, profits generated from the sale of the land would allow the municipality to invest in key transportation infrastructure projects like the twinning and ongoing maintenance of Highway 69 and additional improvements on Highway 63.

“The Alberta government has worked closely with the municipality to resolve council’s concerns about the housing density in Parsons Creek and meet the conditions of the agreement, so that we can move ahead with development.

“When the Government of Alberta signed this historic land transfer agreement, we had hoped that this was the beginning of an innovative partnership between two levels of government, sharing a common goal of increasing the quality of life for Fort McMurray and area residents and providing increased autonomy for the municipality.

“Unfortunately, elements of council have been unwilling to support a number of initiatives that would address urgent housing and infrastructure needs in Fort McMurray. It is frustrating to see these officials who were elected to serve the best interests of the community, act in such a reckless and counterproductive manner. The people of Wood Buffalo deserve better and I urge council to re-examine their decision.”
