“Disaster can strike anywhere, at any time. Last year’s floods in Alberta were an important reminder that emergency preparedness is a shared responsibility and essential for strong and resilient communities. I encourage all Albertans to do their part to be prepared.”
Albertans can take four simple steps to enhance their preparedness:
Know the risks
Know the risks in your community and the how to respond. Contact your municipality to learn about its emergency plan and for advice on identifying the risks in your area.
Make a plan
Make a plan for what your family will do, who to contact and where to go during an emergency. Practice it regularly.
Put together a 72-hour kit
Assemble a 72-hour kit with non-perishable food, water, medication, warm clothing and comfort items. This kit should be prepared in case you need to evacuate quickly. Every vehicle should also be equipped with an emergency kit.
Keep yourself informed
Keep yourself informed before and during any emergency by learning where to access information from your community and emergency officials. Listen, watch, and follow local media and stay connected with family, friends and neighbours.
Albertans are also encouraged to subscribe to Alberta Emergency Alert to get warnings about emergencies by:
- visiting Alberta Emergency Alert, or
- downloading the Alberta Emergency Alert app.
An iOS version is in development.
