Five Calgary organizations have received funding in the first round of grants made available through the province’s Special Flood Recovery Program.

“Nonprofit organizations provide essential programs and services for families and communities.  This funding will not only assist organizations with reconstruction and renovation projects, it will help address the increased demand put on programs as a result of the 2013 floods.  It will help our communities continue to rebuild.”

Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Culture

A total of $4 million has been made available through the program to assist the nonprofit/voluntary sector with flood recovery initiatives: $1 million in 2013-14 and $3 million through Budget 2014. The funding is intended to address costs associated with flood impacts not covered by insurance or the Disaster Recovery Program.

Organizations receiving grants to assist in flood recovery include:

  • Southern Alberta Hostelling Association - $242,100 for facility restoration costs
  • Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre Society - $200,000 for facility renovation and operational costs
  • Fresh Start Addictions Centre - $75,000 to offset costs associated with additional client services during the flood
  • Calgary Young Women’s Christian Association - $75,000 for redesigning staff positions
  • The Calgary Zoological Society - $75,000 for Calgary Zoo rebuilding costs

Funding for the Special Flood Recovery Program is administered by Alberta Culture using criteria established for the existing Community Facility Enhancement Program and Community Initiatives Program.

Under the Building Alberta Plan, our government is investing in families and communities, living within our means, and opening new markets for Alberta's resources to ensure we're able to fund the services Albertans told us matter most to them. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
