Five High River organizations have received funding in the first round of grants made available through the Alberta government’s Special Flood Recovery Program.

“The floods of 2013 demonstrated just how vital a role Alberta’s nonprofits play in our communities. Even as these organizations work to recover themselves, they continue to support our youth, families and our most vulnerable citizens. This funding will help them deliver the important programs and services that are helping others and making our communities stronger.”

Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Culture

A total of $4 million has been made available through the program to assist the nonprofit/voluntary sector with flood recovery initiatives: $1 million in 2013-14 and $3 million through Budget 2014. The funding is intended to address costs associated with flood impacts not covered by insurance or the Disaster Recovery Program.

Organizations receiving grants to assist in flood recovery include:

  • Literacy for Life - $116,642 for operational costs and a flood book
  • Foothills Fetal Alcohol Society - $30,000 to redevelop and rebuild resources to support prevention and awareness programs
  • Foothills Special Needs Association for Parents and Siblings - $49,627 for programming costs and hiring a family support coordinator
  • High River Figure Skating Club - $749 for equipment damage
  • Rowan House Society Emergency Shelter -  $75,000 for continued support to in-shelter residents

Funding for the Special Flood Recovery Program is administered by Alberta Culture using criteria established for the existing Community Facility Enhancement Program and Community Initiatives Program.

Under the Building Alberta Plan, our government is investing in families and communities, living within our means, and opening new markets for Alberta's resources to ensure we're able to fund the services Albertans told us matter most to them. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
