More than 2,500 kilometres of existing provincial highways will be rehabilitated as part of the current three-year construction program. Budget 2014 provides $735 million for highway rehabilitation, an increase of $284 million from the 2013-16 Capital Plan.

“Our Building Alberta Plan invests wisely for Albertans by protecting our existing infrastructure and therefore protecting taxpayer investments for the future. A smart budget means striking the right balance between building critical new infrastructure while giving new life to our existing roads and bridges.”

- Alison Redford, Premier

This rehabilitation funding is part of the Redford government’s $5.1 billion investment into expanding and rehabilitating the provincial highway network.

“We are listening to Albertans and they have asked us to invest in strategic and timely rehabilitation that reduces the need for expensive reconstruction in the future. There are many connector roads throughout Alberta that provide key social and economic ties and we want to make sure they can stand the test of time.”

- Wayne Drysdale, Transportation Minister

“We would like to commend the Government of Alberta for putting more dollars into highways and provincial bridges. It is important to rural Alberta to keep our commerce moving, as good highways add to the strong rural economy that supports this province. The list of needed projects is not going away. Alberta Transportation understands the importance of rebuilding and maintaining the rural highways.”

- Bob Barss, President Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMDC)

Rehabiltiation priorities are evaluated based on a number of factors such as safety, traffic counts, project costs, future development, pavement condition, market access and a variety of other factors.  The Alberta government makes its Transportation Construction program available to all Albertans annually on the web.

Under the Building Alberta Plan, our government is investing in families and communities, living within our means, and opening new markets for Alberta's resources to ensure we're able to fund the services Albertans told us matter most to them. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
