Ukraine flag raising

Due to the mounting unrest in Ukraine, and to demonstrate Albertans’ support for a peaceful resolution, Ukraine’s flag will fly at the Alberta Legislature for the next week.

“The ongoing violence in Ukraine is front of mind for Albertans as we persist in our hope for a peaceful resolution. We remain opposed to the escalating threats to Ukraine’s democracy, freedom and safety of its people. Regardless of the final outcome of today’s referendum in Crimea, our thoughts go out to the people of Ukraine now and in the important days ahead.”

- Alison Redford, Premier of Alberta

The Government of Alberta will continue to work collaboratively with the Government of Canada and support their promotion of sustainable economic growth, democratic development and good governance in Ukraine. The Government of Alberta will also continue its work with the Advisory Council on Alberta-Ukraine Relations to stay up to date on recommendations and monitor the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a clear violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The raising of Ukraine's flag today is a clear sign of Alberta's reaffirmation of support for Ukraine's sovereignty, unity and the right of Ukraine to choose their own destiny without the interference, aggression and provocation of Russia.”

- Olesia Luciw-Andryjowycz, President, Ukrainian Canadian Congress - Alberta Provincial Council

In addition to a grant of $25,000 from the International Disaster Relief Fund, the Government of Alberta is matching up to $100,000 in private donations made to either the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Alberta Provincial Council or the Canada Ukraine Foundation.
