This release was issued under a previous government.

Alberta is making the laws surrounding estate administration easier to find and understand, which is expected to reduce legal costs and conflicts for Albertans. The Estate Administration Act is intended to serve as a roadmap for personal representatives so they can better understand and perform the administration of the estate of a deceased person.

“We’re making it easier for personal representatives administering an estate to understand their role and responsibilities. This is the next step in our commitment to update succession laws in Alberta.”

- Jonathan Denis, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General

This proposed legislation accomplishes these objectives by modernizing and reorganizing the Administration of Estates Act, the Devolution of Real Property Act and substantive rules from the Surrogate Rules. The proposed changes were supported in consultations with experts from across the province who specialize in the administration of wills and estates.

Under the Building Alberta Plan, our government is investing in families and communities, living within our means, and opening new markets for Alberta's resources to ensure we're able to fund the services Albertans told us matter most to them. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
