This release was issued under a previous government.

Under Bill 44, the Notaries and Commissioners Act, the Notaries Public Act and the Commissioners for Oaths Act will be modernized and consolidated into one Act. The legislation will also clarify the rules and processes for Notaries Public and Commissioners for Oaths.

“Notaries Public and Commissioners of Oaths play a critical role in our legal system. These modifications ensure Albertans continue to receive appropriate and professional service from Notaries Public and Commissioners for Oaths.”

- Jonathan Denis, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General

While these updates will not change most of the day-to-day responsibilities of Notaries Public and Commissioners for Oaths, they include revisions to modernize language, provide greater clarity and strengthen maximum fines so they are in line with other Acts. A provision will also be included to allow for a code of conduct in the regulations to articulate appropriate behavior for appointees.

“It is extremely important that Notaries Public and Commissioners of Oaths have a strong understanding of their responsibilities and roles in our legal system. This Act makes sure the legislation is consistent, clear and up-to-date.”

- Cathy Olesen, MLA Sherwood Park, Bill 44 sponsor

Under the Building Alberta Plan, our government is investing in families and communities, living within our means, and opening new markets for Alberta's resources to ensure we're able to fund the services Albertans told us matter most to them. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
