This release was issued under a previous government.
“Alberta’s emergency management model is internationally renowned, and we are keen to share information on our successes in responding to the June floods in southern Alberta and our rebuilding efforts. This will be a tremendous opportunity to build on our existing relationships with Chinese officials and to learn from each other about disaster management.”
While in China, Griffiths will participate in the Shanghai International Disaster Reduction and Security Show. The expo is the largest conference of its kind in Asia. It brings together emergency management officials, international experts, and private sector companies from across China and around the world to share information about various approaches to disaster response, emergency preparedness, and new developments in technology and equipment.
Griffiths will also meet with senior members of the Government of Heilongjiang, Alberta’s sister province. Heilongjiang contributed to Alberta’s flood relief efforts in June before experiencing its own floods in August.
In Harbin, Griffiths will follow up on the Premier’s recent meetings with local officials and will discuss potential joint projects on disaster preparation and disaster management. Additional meetings will also be held with government officials in Shanghai and with the Shanghai disaster planning office to exchange ideas and experiences.
Our government was elected to keep building Alberta, to live within its means and to fight to open new markets for Alberta’s resources. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
The estimated cost of the mission for Griffiths plus one staff is $33,000.
