“By building a safe and efficient transportation network, we are making a strong investment in the current and future prosperity of families and industry along this key corridor. Twinning Highway 43 not only supports economic growth in northwestern Alberta but it expands market access for the entire province.”
Since 1998, more than $800 million has been invested to twin Highway 43 between Edmonton and Grande Prairie, a 432 kilometre project planned for completion in 2014.
“I am pleased to see how the provincial government continues to invest in northern Alberta. This critical link to the region will now be safer for residents and industry. We continue to see increased traffic in this area and anticipate the opening of the final section of Highway 43 twinning next year.”
Second-last stretch of twinning
The newest twinning section, expected to open to the public this afternoon, is located between Crooked Creek and Sturgeon Lake. Work began in fall 2010 on the 17 kilometre stretch and completion of the $26 million project was delayed one year due to wet weather.
Last stretch of twinning
Only 20 kilometres of Highway 43 twinning remains to be completed between Highway 16 west of Edmonton and Grande Prairie. The final section is located within the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation west of Valleyview.
Work on this $78 million contract began in January 2013 and it is expected to open to the public by the end of next year. Finishing this final section will complete the CANAMEX Trade Corridor between Grande Prairie and the Alberta-Montana border.
Key corridor
Highway 43 is one of Alberta’s high speed corridors, designed to carry high volumes of traffic efficiently and safely serve industrial vehicles as well as tourists and local residents. Traffic volumes along Highway 43 between Edmonton and Grande Prairie range from 6,000 to 35,000 vehicles daily.
Twinning Highway 43 is one of many projects where Alberta Transportation is focusing investment on expanding market access through work on core infrastructure and key corridors. This benefits all Albertans, regardless of where they live.
Our government was elected to keep building Alberta, to live within its means and to fight to open new markets for Alberta’s resources. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
