This release was issued under a previous government.

The Alberta government is providing up to $360,000 to support restorative justice programs and initiatives.

What is restorative justice?

Restorative justice programs address the harm crime causes to victims and the community as well as the causes of crime.

Restorative justice brings victims and offenders together to discuss the impact of the crime, and how the harm can be best repaired. It is a voluntary process that gives victims more options in dealing with the crime and holds offenders accountable for their actions.

Restorative justice empowers victims and offers them an opportunity to express their views and needs. It can also make offenders aware of better choices they can make to avoid reoffending.

The programs supplement or are an alternative to any sentence and can be initiated at any time during the criminal justice process.

Who should apply?

  • Incorporated non-profit and volunteer organizations
  • Local community groups
  • First Nations
