This release was issued under a previous government.

A 22-kilometre-stretch of Highway 40 is re-opening between the Peter Lougheed Park winter gates (Highway 68) and Lost Lemon Lookout Wednesday, September 4.

Highway 40 Flood Damage Repairs

June flooding caused damage to the highway as torrents of water and debris scraped the roadway and tore across embankments, plugging culverts and ditches.

Repairs included clearing out all of the debris, and fixing and re-grading the damaged sections of the highway.

Highway 40 had been closed from Highway 1 to Highway 541 but sections up to the Peter Lougheed Provincial Park winter gates (Highway 68) opened as repairs were completed earlier this summer.

Fixing this section of the highway means nearly 72 kms of the road will now be open from Highway 1 to the summit at Lost Lemon Lookout, a favourite for recreational enthusiasts and a staging point for hunters heading beyond the park boundary.

The remaining 33 kms of road from the summit to Highway 541 is closed pending repairs, with damage to creek crossings and roadways needing significant work. It is anticipated this section will re-open next year

Safety in construction zones

Motorists visiting this part of K-Country are asked to drive with caution and watch for crews and equipment still doing cleanup in the area.
