The province will support the successful applicant with an up to $5 million investment.

“We know our film, television and digital media industry is an intrinsic part of Alberta’s culture and economy,” said Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Alberta Culture. “To continue to grow this industry in a sustainable way - and optimize public support - we need our private sector partners to step up to the challenge to successfully build and operate their film studio without long-term public support.”

Dedicated studio space in southern Alberta is needed to ensure the ongoing success for Alberta’s film, television and digital media industry, attract more productions to the province and create opportunities for developing and retaining talented Albertans within the province.

Private sector bodies have expressed interest in playing leadership roles in building and operating a viable film studio. As a result, the Alberta government will hold a formal open submission process in order to assess all ideas. The stakeholders who have been working on the Alberta Creative Hub proposal have been invited to submit a revised proposal for consideration in this process.

“The construction of a film studio in Calgary is critical to maintaining and growing our film and television industry,” said Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of Calgary. “We look forward to The Government of Alberta’s participation.”

For details on how to submit a proposal go to: www.culture.alberta.ca/arts/calgaryfilmstudio.aspx. The application period ends September 27, 2013.

Alberta’s film, television and digital media industry employs over 3,000 people and was responsible for over $400 million in economic activity over the last five years. In addition, every dollar government invests in the industry results in significant economic spinoff for hotels, restaurants and other businesses that supply the sector with goods and services.

Our government was elected to keep building Alberta, to live within its means and to fight to open new markets for Alberta’s resources. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
