This release was issued under a previous government.

Work on the bridge over the causeway is expected to take between three and four weeks. Until the work is complete, maximum vehicle weights on the bridge, which is part of Highway 1A through the Town of Chestermere, are being restricted. School buses can still travel across the bridge, as can emergency vehicles, which have a weight exemption.

Signs are in place limiting allowable truck loads to:

  • 16 tonnes for a single unit truck (reduced from 28 tonnes);
  • 31 tonnes for a semi-trailer truck (reduced from 49 tonnes);
  • 42 tonnes for a truck train configuration (reduced from 63 tonnes)
The short-term weight restriction isn’t expected to cause significant disruptions as there are several other routes into the town. Once the maintenance repairs are complete, the bridge will re-open to full legal loads for provincial highways.

This maintenance project is part of Alberta’s investment in our infrastructure and extends the service life of the bridge.

Alberta motorists benefit from bridge safety projects throughout the province year-round. Recent investments in bridge rehabilitation and replacement included: the Highway 55 bridge in Athabasca; the Steinhauer and Grant MacEwan bridges in Fort McMurray; the westbound Highway 1 bridge in Medicine Hat; the Millet bridge on Highway 2; the Peace River bridge, three bridges on Calgary’s Deerfoot Trail 16th Avenue, Ogden and Calf Robe, as well as the Highway 16 bridge north-east of Sherwood Park.

Motorists are reminded to drive courteously in the construction zone and obey all posted speed limits, signs and flag people. Fines for speeding are doubled when workers are present.
