This release was issued under a previous government.

The 50-year-old Shaftsbury Ferry often runs until mid-December when the river starts to freeze up, but this year the ferry will close early to accommodate repairs to the marine gear.

These repairs will create a safer, smoother ride for vehicles on the ferry and benefit both local users and tourists. Regular maintenance, upkeep and repairs protect Alberta’s investment in our infrastructure and improve the function of our unique and historical ferry river crossings.

The permanent ferry information signs have been updated to advise motorists and ferry users of the early closure. The Alberta government operates seven ferries on the provincial highway network. Visit www.transportation.alberta.ca/1965.htm for more information on Alberta’s highway ferries.
