This release was issued under a previous government.

The home was built by Nykola and Theodora (Dora) Stelmach, grandparents of Ed Stelmach, premier of Alberta from 2006 to 2011. The Stelmachs came to Canada as a newly-married couple in 1898 from the Village of Zavydche, then in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now in western Ukraine. The couple farmed in the Krakow district of east central Alberta and had the house constructed at the end of the First World War by craftsmen who were also from Zavydche. The house and farm remain in the former premier's family to this day.

The move of the Stelmach house was initiated by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress - Alberta Provincial Council, as part of its recognition of the 120th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada. The move and eventual restoration are being coordinated through Alberta Culture’s Historic Places Stewardship Section.

Operated by Alberta Culture, the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village is located 25 minutes east of Edmonton on Highway 16. It is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through to September 3.

Regular admission is $9 for adults, $20 for a family (two adults and their children ages 7 to 17), $4 for youth (ages 7 to 17) and $7 for seniors. Children six and under are admitted free. Admission is also free for those with a current Experience Alberta’s History Pass or Friends of the Ukrainian Village Society membership card.
