This release was issued under a previous government.

New traffic signals will replace the existing stop signs on eastbound and westbound 196th Avenue SE over Deerfoot Trail SE. Eastbound and westbound 196th Avenue SE will be reduced to one lane in each direction beginning at 8 p.m. June 19 through to 6 a.m. June 20 to accommodate signal light installations. Please note dates are subject to change. Intermittent halting of traffic while crews work overhead in the Deerfoot Trail SE and 196th Avenue SE area may also be required.

Once operational on June 21, new traffic signals will also benefit motorists travelling off of Deerfoot Trail SE onto 196th Avenue SE. Motorists using off-ramps from northbound and southbound Deerfoot Trail SE will be required to use the new traffic signals to turn onto westbound and eastbound 196th Avenue SE. Existing lane movements will be maintained upon signal light implementation.

The signal lights are scheduled to go into operation on June 21. Please note dates are subject to change. Stoppages or minor delays to traffic may occur when signal lights are implemented.

Motorists should use caution in this area and obey all signs, message boards, and flag people. Fines for speeding are doubled in construction zones when workers are present.

The Alberta government signed a 33-year agreement with Chinook Roads Partnership to design, build, operate and partially finance the southeast leg of the Stoney Trail ring road from its junction with 17th Avenue SE, south along the City of Calgary’s eastern limit, then west along Highway 22X to east of the Macleod Trail interchange. The new road will be fully open to traffic by the fall of 2013.
