“The new interchange will enhance safety and traffic flow at this intersection,” said Ray Danyluk, Minister of Transportation. “This is about providing the infrastructure required to support Calgary’s and Alberta’s economic growth and prosperity.”

Acciona Infrastructure Canada will build the $67-million interchange, which will open to traffic by the fall of 2014.

“It’s great to see this important project move forward as the new interchange will improve access to the ring road for northwest Calgary residents and enhance safety for all users of Stoney Trail,” said Lindsay Blackett, MLA Calgary-North West.

The project also includes a new southbound bridge to carry Stoney Trail over the CP Rail tracks and the realignment of Nose Hill Drive.

“This new interchange will eliminate a set of stop lights at the bottom of a hill, which is an important safety benefit for motorists,” said Alana DeLong, MLA Calgary-Bow.

Interchanges are considered the safest and most efficient way to enter or exit a high-speed roadway. On average, interchanges reduce collisions by 45 per cent and eliminate t-bone and head-on collisions that frequently result in serious injuries or fatalities.
