This release was issued under a previous government.

The Rabbit Hill Road interchange is a brand-new, $29 million access cost shared among the adjacent developers, the City of Edmonton, the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada. Recent development in the area required the construction of an interchange to allow for increased safety and efficient traffic flow.

The project consists of a six-lane overpass for Rabbit Hill Road over Anthony Henday Drive and the construction of approximately 0.5 km of two-lane roads on either side of the overpass to tie into existing roadways.

The first phase of construction was completed by the City of Edmonton and Windermere Lands Ltd. in fall 2009 at a cost of $15.5 million, and included grading and paving of the access ramps for the interchange, and signage and traffic signals on Rabbit Hill Road. The second phase of construction began in May 2010 at a cost of $13.5 million and was funded by the governments of Canada and Alberta. The work included construction of the bridge structure and twinning of Rabbit Hill Road from Ellerslie Road to the north boundary of the Transportation and Utility Corridor.

Approximately 40,000 man hours went into this project. The amount of materials used includes: 3,200 cubic metres of concrete; 370 metric tonnes of reinforcing steel; 1,150 metric tonnes of structural steel; 300,000 cubic metres of excavation and 13,500 metric tonnes of asphalt.

Anthony Henday Drive is an important part of the North-South Trade Corridor which stretches from the Alberta-B.C. border west of Grande Prairie to the Alberta-Montana Border at Coutts. This project further enhances the Corridor by marking another step towards 800 kilometres of free flow traffic from Nanton to Grande Prairie.

Clean-up will continue in the area. Motorists should use caution in construction areas and obey all signs and message boards. Motorists are reminded that fines for speeding are doubled through construction zones when workers are present.
