Purpose: Albertans are invited to provide feedback on the proposed deregulations of Coalspur Provincial Recreation Area and Lambert Creek Provincial Recreation Area, near Edson.

Coalspur Provincial Recreation Area is a small, low usage site with eight basic camping stalls. Expanding mining activities in the immediate vicinity will have a significant impact on the site.  Lambert Creek Provincial Recreation Area is a small group use site that has not received any bookings or inquiries in the past year.

Both sites are subject to vandalism and are no longer considered commercially viable for private operators. Given the small size and limited natural resources of these sites, it is not considered feasible to develop new facilities for recreation or tourism.

The proposed deregulations would see the sites, totaling 3.25 hectares, legally removed from the parks system and the land transferred to Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. There are alternative campground and day use facilities at the nearby McLeod River Provincial Recreation Area, Fairfax Lake Provincial Recreation Area and Watson Creek Provincial Recreation Area.

To compensate for the potential closure of the two sites, additional camping stalls will be added to McLeod River and Fairfax Lake provincial recreation areas with support from Coal Valley Resources Inc. and Hinton Wood Products (a division of West Fraser Mills Ltd.).  The planned campground expansion at McLeod River and Fairfax Lake will provide enhanced recreational opportunities at these sites.

Albertans are invited to review the proposal and comment online at www.albertaparks.ca/consult.  Comments will also be accepted by mail at:

Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation

2nd floor, Oxbridge Place

9820 – 106 Street

Feedback must be submitted by April 5. A decision regarding the proposal will be made after the 60-day public consultation period is over and all comments have been considered.
