Purpose: Albertans are invited to provide feedback on the proposed transfers of Groat Creek, Hoodoos and Horseshoe Canyon Provincial Recreation Areas to local authorities for their continued operation as public recreation sites.

Groat Creek Provincial Recreation Area
  • The day-use site is located in west central Alberta near Whitecourt.
  • The site was closed in 1995 due to low usage. In 2002, Woodlands County proposed to reopen the site and operate it for public recreation purposes.
  • Woodlands County and the province signed an interim operating agreement in 2002 on the understanding the site would be transferred to the county in the future.

Horseshoe Canyon Provincial Recreation Area

  • The day-use site is located in south central Alberta within the Municipality of Kneehill County.
  • Kneehill County and the Town of Drumheller have jointly operated the site since 1999.

Hoodoos Provincial Recreation Area

  • The day-use site is located in south central Alberta within the Town of Drumheller.
  • The site is a rest area for travelers and provides access to the Hoodoos. The transfer of the site will not change either the protection or use of the Hoodoos.
  • The Town of Drumheller has operated the site for approximately 15 years.

The proposals are administrative in nature, and if approved, would see the Government of Alberta transfer the land to the local authorities to provide them with greater flexibility to operate the sites, and promote local and regional tourism opportunities. If the provincial recreation areas are not used for public recreation purposes, the sites will be transferred back to the province.

Albertans are invited to review the proposal and comment online at http://www.tpr.alberta.ca/ by clicking on Parks and Public Consultation.  Comments will also be accepted by mail at:

2nd floor, Oxbridge Place

Feedback must be submitted by December 12. A decision regarding the proposal will be made after the 60-day public consultation period is over and all comments have been considered.
