Low lake levels affect boat launches at six provincial parks and recreation areas
Four fire bans also in place this weekend
Edmonton...
A half dozen boat launches in provincial parks and recreation areas are inoperable due to low lake levels. The lack of winter precipitation and a dry spring have resulted in water levels dropping almost a metre at some boat launches. Vehicles launching boats on trailers could damage their vehicles and equipment.

Because of the safety risks, it is not recommended that visitors with motorized boats use the following boat launches at this time:
  • Figure Eight Lake Provincial Recreation Area, near Grimshaw;
  • Queen Elizabeth Provincial Park, near Grimshaw;
  • Saskatoon Island Provincial Park, near Grande Prairie;
  • Hilliard’s Bay Provincial Park, near High Prairie (boat launch closed until further notice);
  • Thunder Lake Provincial Park near Barrhead; and,
  • Coal Lake North, near Wetaskiwin.

While caution is still advised, visitors with small hand-boats may continue to use these boat launches, by hand-launching and walking their boats into deeper water.

Visitors are also encouraged to launch motorized boats with care at Pigeon Lake Provincial Park, near Wetaskiwin, and Minnow Lake Provincial Recreation Area, near Edson.

Boating recreation activities including angling and water sports are popular at these locations, and in some cases, nearby boat launches are accessible. For more information on provincial parks, visit www.albertaparks.ca.

Due to dry conditions, fire bans are currently in place at Long Lake, Thunder Lake and Strathcona Science provincial parks, and Cooking Lake/Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area. The bans are effective immediately and until further notice. These fire bans prohibit the use of all wood, briquette and propane/natural gas fires, including those contained in designated fire facilities and portable fire pits. Gas and propane stoves and barbecues, when approved for cooking, are allowed. For current fire ban information, visit www.albertafirebans.ca.
