International and Intergovernmental Relations Minister Len Webber will ensure Alberta is positioned as a reliable, environmentally responsible energy producer to North America at the upcoming Council of State Governments (CSG) Annual Conference in LaQuinta, California, from November 12-15.

“Alberta’s tremendous success in developing the oil sands has vaulted the province onto the world stage,” said Webber. “This conference is an opportunity for me to meet with legislators from across the U.S. to highlight our efforts regarding environmentally sustainable oil production and our $2-billion investment in carbon capture and storage.”

The Minister will be joined by Rocky Mountain House MLA Ty Lund, who is a member of the CSG-West Trade and Transportation Committee and will participate in discussions about trade and transportation.

The U.S. is Alberta’s largest international trading partner. In 2008, the U.S. purchased nearly $96 billion of Alberta goods. About 87 per cent of all Alberta’s exports are sold to the U.S.

CSG provides a non-partisan platform to promote cooperation amongst the legislatures across the United States. Alberta, British Columbia, and U.S. Pacific island territories are associate members of the western chapter of CSG. To learn more about CSG, and the agenda of the 2009 National Annual Conference visit http://www.csg.org/events/annualmeeting/LaQuinta.aspx.

The cost of travel, accommodation and meals for Webber and Lund is approximately $6,000.

The Government of Alberta has a clear plan for a strong economic recovery. The Way Forward will bring Alberta back into a surplus position in three years by trimming government spending; using cash reserves to protect key programs; continuing to invest in public infrastructure; and ensuring that our province's industries are competitive and continue to attract investment to provide jobs and prosperity.
