New Hall of Fame builds on '88 Olympic legacy, inspires Canadians through sport

Calgary...
The governments of Canada and Alberta and the City of Calgary have partnered to bring Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame to Alberta. The new Hall of Fame will be constructed within Canada Olympic Park (COP) in Calgary, and is scheduled to open in spring 2011.

“It is a priority of our government to ensure people of all ages can access and experience our culture, which includes sport and recreation,” said Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit. “A part of who we are as Albertans and Canadians is reflected in the sports we watch and play, and the teams we belong, or have belonged, to.”

Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame recognizes and honours Canada’s sports heroes. It is the Hall’s vision to inspire Canadian identity and national pride through the compelling stories of those outstanding achievements that make up Canada’s sports history.

“Sports are much more than individual accomplishments, awards and statistics - they’re about inspiring people to do their best,” said Cindy Ady, Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation. “Once completed, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and Canada Olympic Park will be an epicentre for Canadian sports experience, training and education.”

The Alberta government is providing up to $10 million to assist with the construction of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. The new Hall of Fame will help to boost tourism, and will be a valuable addition to the educational experience for visitors. COP is also the primary training site of Canada’s Olympic and Paralympic winter athletes.

The Government of Alberta has a clear plan for a strong economic recovery. The Way Forward will bring Alberta back into a surplus position in three years by trimming government spending; using cash reserves to protect key programs; continuing to invest in public infrastructure; and ensuring that our province's industries are competitive and continue to attract investment to provide jobs and prosperity.
