Alberta students benefit from WorldSkills equipment
Trades and technology classrooms get upgrades across the province
Spruce Grove... Thousands of Alberta trades and technology students will benefit from state-of-the-art equipment purchased by the Alberta government for WorldSkills Calgary 2009.
As a legacy from the international competition, the government has distributed the equipment to schools and post-secondary training providers across the province. Computers, water saws, cooking equipment and moulding machines are among the many items used during the four-day Worldskills competition held this September.
“Students and apprentices across the province will gain hands-on opportunities to learn new skills and keep up with innovations in technology by using this equipment,” said Doug Horner, Minister of Advanced Education and Technology. “Skilled tradespeople and technologists are key to building our next generation workforce.”
“The legacy equipment will positively impact high school students and teachers in more than 40 school jurisdictions across Alberta,” said Minister of Education, Dave Hancock. “The timing couldn’t be better as this school year marks the start of the new Career and Technology Studies high school program.”
“The distribution of the equipment builds on the tremendous momentum created by Worldskills Calgary 2009,” said Minister of Employment and Immigration Hector Goudreau. “The renewed interest in skilled trades and technology sectors will help Alberta build and educate the skilled and dynamic workforce we will need in the future.”
All high schools offering career and technology studies courses and all post-secondary training providers offering apprenticeship technical training that submitted proposals are receiving equipment or tools. When awarding the equipment, the government considered the need to replace old equipment and the value added to the overall community.
Alberta invested $24 million toward WorldSkills Calgary 2009. About $16 million was spent on this equipment and $1.7 million was used to transport thousands of Alberta students to the competition.
