Premier broadens stakeholder involvement in Alberta Hospital Edmonton transition

Edmonton...
In keeping with his commitment that no patient will be moved from Alberta Hospital until appropriate community-based care is available, Premier Ed Stelmach has asked Health Minister Ron Liepert and Alberta Health Services President and CEO Dr. Stephen Duckett to assemble an implementation team, that includes representation from the mental health profession and patient advocates, to guide the transition to community-based care.

The committee will be co-chaired by Don Sieben, a member of the Alberta Health Services board, and Dennis Anderson, founder of the Alberta Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health.

“My government remains committed to improving the lives of Albertans by moving towards community-based care as advocated by leaders in the mental health community,” said Premier Stelmach.

“These are important steps towards enhancing quality of life and we will continue moving forward. I want to assure all Albertans, however, that these improvements will happen in a measured and orderly fashion and in consultation with health providers and others intimately involved with the system.

“With the creation of this committee, concerns and questions that will inevitably arise as the process unfolds will have a forum to be fully addressed as changes evolve in a timeframe that best suits the patient.”

Premier Stelmach has asked Edmonton-Rutherford MLA Fred Horne to serve as his designate on the committee.
