Alberta marks International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day
Edmonton... September 9 is International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day. The day is held on the ninth day of the ninth month each year to remind people around the world that during the nine months of pregnancy, a woman should abstain from alcohol. It is also a time to remember those whose lives have been affected because of prenatal alcohol exposure.
“Partners, families, friends and society all play a critical role in preventing FASD and supporting those already affected,” said Alberta Children and Youth Services Minister Janis Tarchuk. “I encourage all Albertans to recognize International FASD Awareness Day by learning about the importance of expectant mothers abstaining from drinking alcohol.”
Approximately 23,000 Albertans are affected by FASD, which covers a broad spectrum of lifelong disabilities and brain damage caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. Under a 10-year plan to deliver community-led FASD programs and services, research and awareness-raising activities, the Alberta government is committed to reducing the incidence of FASD and improving the quality of life for those already affected. Through 12 FASD Service Networks, people affected by FASD and their caregivers have access to local assessment and diagnostic services, and comprehensive supports that encourage them to reach their full potential.
This is the 11th annual International FASD Awareness Day. Residents of Auckland, New Zealand, first marked the day in 1999. Since then, every September 9, at 9:09 a.m., communities across the world ring bells for one minute to remember the significance of supporting women to have healthy pregnancies.
