Province supports grassroots initiative to tackle crime
Project engages citizens in growth and development of their neighbourhoods
St. Albert...
The City of St. Albert’s Neighbourhood Development Team (NDT) project is receiving $450,000 over the next three years though the province’s Safe Communities Innovation Fund (SCIF) to address crime and social disorder in targeted, high-risk neighbourhoods.

“Providing safe and secure communities is a priority for this government,” said Municipal Affairs Minister Ray Danyluk. “St. Albert’s project is an exceptional example of a strategic community-police partnership that encourages citizens to become actively involved in addressing local issues to help make their communities and neighbourhoods safer.”

The NDT project will address individual, family, peer group, and community factors, including: problem solving and coping skills, family connection, and support services in the community. Ultimately, the project’s activities will build safer communities by creating stronger bonds between neighbours.

Issues to be addressed include graffiti, vandalism, drug and alcohol-related offenses, theft and burglary, and large, intimidating gatherings of youth. The project is outcome-focused and involves community members working in partnership with the City of St. Albert to create and implement solutions to identified issues. This approach will allow citizens to actively participate in the growth of their neighbourhoods and community.

“Safety is a priority for our community, one that is shared by council, city administration and our residents,” said St. Albert Mayor Nolan Crouse. “We are extremely excited to receive these funds, which will certainly enhance our community’s safety initiatives.”

The $60-million SCIF is part of the government’s response to reducing and preventing crime in Alberta. It is a partnership of nine government ministries working closely with police, community groups, municipalities, businesses, and social agencies to find meaningful and long-term solutions to address crime in a meaningful way.
