Working group continues making progress in Strathcona County
Edmonton... A working group that was established two weeks ago in Strathcona County, to enhance the safety of residents and youth at a residential treatment facility in the community and address outstanding community concerns, continues to make progress during its second meeting on June 17.
Children and Youth Services, Edmonton and Area Child and Family Services, Bosco Homes, Strathcona County, Strathcona County RCMP, and Strathcona Residents’ Association representatives focused on shaping the community advisory committee that all parties agreed to work toward forming on June 9.
During the meeting, representatives from the above groups:
- Received an update on concrete action that has been taken since the recent tragic homicides in the community to help ensure the safety of community residents and youth at the facility operated by Bosco Homes. Steps include increasing the number of staff over and above the full complement of staff who supervise youth at the facility and ensuring there are no new admissions to the facility.
- Established short- and long-term goals for the community advisory committee, including reducing the number of youth going absent without permission, reducing the risk and public perception of risk, and agreeing on protocols related to prevention and response for youth going absent without permission.
- Began to develop terms of reference for the community advisory committee.
- Agreed that partners would speak with their respective organizations about progress made to date and receive feedback before the next meeting.
Work on the terms of reference, including establishing mechanisms to measure the success of the committee in achieving its goals and objectives, will be discussed when the working group reconvenes in the next week.
In addition, the working group discussed possible dates and locations for a community meeting where the public at large will have an opportunity to learn about action taken to date to help ensure the safety of the community and the youth living at the facility, share their concerns and offer possible solutions.
While a date and location for the public meeting were not finalized at the working group meeting, representatives from the different organizations agreed on the need to hold the meeting within the next two weeks and preferably before the end of June.
