Parties agree to work together to address community concerns
Public meeting planned following tragic events in Strathcona County
Edmonton...
Children and Youth Services, Edmonton and Area Child and Family Services, and the Strathcona County Royal Canadian Mounted Police have agreed to work together to address community concerns following a recent situation where two youths in government care were charged in connection with a double homicide in the county.

The agreement was the outcome of a meeting hosted by Strathcona County on June 4 between representatives from the different organizations.

Representatives at the meeting agreed to establish a working group to review actions taken to date, address outstanding concerns, and make arrangements for a community meeting in the coming weeks. The public meeting will provide community members with information in response to questions raised about the assessment, supervision, and procedures for overseeing children and youth at the residential treatment facility, as well as discussing next steps to further address concerns.

Community members will have the opportunity at the meeting to provide their comments and suggestions. Details of the public meeting will be released once the date and location are confirmed.

“It’s important for our ministry to work in co-operation with the community to balance the needs of children and youth in our care and the need of the community to feel safe,” said Children and Youth Services Minister Janis Tarchuk.

“We are pleased the Government of Alberta is acting promptly to address the concerns of our community,” said Strathcona County Mayor Cathy Olesen. “In the wake of this tragedy, residents and Council are looking for positive solutions and actions, and we will assist the Province in any way we can.”
