Dedicated Alberta leaders chosen to receive new active communities award from the Lieutenant Governor
Edmonton... A number of Albertans working to make their communities healthier and more active places to be are about to have their outstanding efforts recognized as recipients of the inaugural Lieutenant Governor’s Leadership for Active Communities Award.
The new award program recognizes the achievements of individuals and groups who are leading community change that builds participation in active living, recreation and sport.
“I’m honoured to be able to present these first awards to some truly great citizens and community leaders who are doing so much to encourage their fellow Albertans to take a more balanced, active and healthy approach to life,” said Lieutenant Governor Norman Kwong.  “I certainly hope this program will encourage others to follow their lead.”
The award recipients for 2009 are:
Greg Krischke (Leduc) - Elected Community Leader Award
Bryn Lewin (Kitscoty) - Community Leader of Tomorrow Award
John Logan (Edmonton) - Outstanding Community Leader Award
Ptarmigan Nordic Ski Club (Fort McMurray) - Group Spirit of Community Leadership Award
Sol Rolingher (Edmonton) - Corporate Community Leader Award
The awards are administered through the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association. “These awards encourage those who have dedicated themselves to creating excellence in active community leadership, using recreation as a catalyst,” said Dr. Barry Mitchelson, President of Recreation for Life which serves as funding arm of the Association. “Their demonstrated leadership is key to the success of broader efforts taking place across the province to enhance the quality of life enjoyed by all Albertans.”
The awards ceremony will take place in Edmonton at the Royal Alberta Museum theatre at 5:30 pm on Saturday, May 30. Public attendance is by invitation only. Media are welcome to attend.

Lieutenant Governor’s Leadership for Active Communities Award - 2009 Recipients
Greg Krischke - Elected Community Leader Award
As a member of City Council and Mayor of Leduc, Greg Krischke has demonstrated an unyielding commitment to providing active living opportunities for residents. He has been a key leader in continuous trail development, enhancement of the Leduc Recreation Centre, playground replacement and the creation of safe play areas. He has also served Albertans as a board member and volunteer with the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association and the Alberta Sport Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation.
Award description - Presented to a local, provincial or federal elected official who contributes to the development of active communities and supports community level strategies to enhance active lifestyles.
Bryn Lewin - Community Leader of Tomorrow Award
Bryn is an outstanding young man who works to promote active living in the Village of Kitscoty, located just west of Lloydminster. He is an exceptional role model who plays hockey, volleyball, baseball and track. He also coaches team sports and golf. He places a high value on education and believes that youth have a responsibility to improve their communities.
Award description - Presented to a young Albertan who demonstrates skills and qualities that are expected to make them a future community leader and encourages others to use recreation and parks to build a more active and healthy community.
John Logan - Outstanding Community Leader Award
John Logan has shown his Edmonton community of Bonnie Doon the value of participation and the importance of physical activity for all ages. As a longstanding member of the Bonnie Doon Community League, his efforts to increase neighbourhood parkland resulted in the transformation of a flat one acre unused plot of land into an urban forest with a natural amphitheatre and multifunctional trails that are enjoyed daily by residents. He also has inspired other neighbourhoods to build parks, playgrounds and rinks and coordinated with community leagues across Edmonton to make swim opportunities available to everyone.
Award description - Recognizes an individual who acts as a catalyst, inspiring and engaging others to increase citizen involvement in active living, recreation and sport.
Ptarmigan Nordic Ski Club - Group Spirit of Community Leadership Award
The Club has a long history of promoting active lifestyles for Fort McMurray residents of all ages and ability levels. The Club has been instrumental in developing and maintaining the Birchwood Trail System for winter and summer use by the public and also encourages active living through ski programs that range from beginner to advanced/competitive levels. Members’ efforts have played an important role in promoting year round outdoor recreation while encouraging greater appreciation for the natural environment.
Award description - Presented to an Alberta-based organization, committee, coalition or informal group of three or more citizens whose mission and activities result in increased citizen engagement and greater participation in active recreation.
Sol Rolingher - Corporate Community Leader Award
As Chair of the River Valley Alliance in the Edmonton region, Sol Rolingher has dedicated himself to the vision of an internationally recognized waterfront park for the benefit of capital region residents and visitors. His leadership allowed the River Valley Alliance to become a model for municipal cooperation and coordination. Sol has encouraged all walks of life to use and enjoy the river valley and to take pride in their city.
Award description - Presented to a corporate leader who initiates and supports community based strategies designed to get more people, more active, more often.
