Eight community leaders to join Alberta Order of Excellence

Eight Alberta community leaders and innovators have been selected to receive the province’s highest honour. Chosen in recognition of outstanding service to their province and country, the Alberta Order of Excellence (AOE) members for 2009 are:

Shirzad Ahmed (Calgary) - for his service and leadership in the areas of human rights, international humanitarian relief and supports for immigrants and refugees.

Henry Bergen (Coaldale) - for agricultural innovations that have helped to increase crop yields, limit the use of pesticides and minimize moisture loss and soil erosion for Alberta producers.

William (Bill) Bowes (Grande Prairie) - for his civic leadership on a wide range of economic and community development initiatives and his service as a leader in newspaper publishing.

Sister Helen Hengel (Calgary) - for her dedication to helping people suffering from addictions and her service as an educator and as a counselor for people needing assistance and support.

Bernadette McDonald (Banff) - for her work to promote mountain culture through a range of Banff-based programs and to increase awareness of mountain environmental preservation.

Kenneth Sauer (Medicine Hat) - for his longstanding record of volunteer service to the people of Medicine Hat in a wide range of areas from public school programs to sports and recreation.

Barrie Strafford (Calgary) - for his pioneering work to develop nursing home and assisted living facilities and his commitment to serving the most vulnerable members of his community.

Harold (Hal) Wyatt (Calgary) - for his extensive record of volunteer service and leadership in a wide range of areas from the arts, to education, to sports and community development.

The new members will be invested into the Order in a ceremony in Edmonton on Thursday, October 15. This will bring the total AOE membership to 101.  Biographies and portraits of the new members will be available closer to the investiture. The Alberta Order of Excellence is the highest honour the province can bestow on a citizen. More information about AOE is at www.lieutenantgovernor.ab.ca/aoe/.
