At-risk youth will benefit from additional funding to youth shelters
$200,000 boost will help emergency shelters support vulnerable youth
Edmonton... Eight youth emergency shelters across the province are receiving a one-time grant from the provincial government to help support youth at risk. Shelters can allocate funds based on priorities they’ve identified - whether it be food, clothing and transportation for youth; training for staff; or programming, such as outreach services.
“Youth emergency shelters and their staff do an outstanding job helping these young people during difficult times in their lives,” said Children and Youth Services Minister Janis Tarchuk. “This investment will support shelters in their work to provide youth in need with a safe and caring place and help them connect to other resources in the community so they can reach their full potential.”
The eight shelters in Edmonton (2), Calgary (2), Red Deer, Lethbridge, Grande Prairie and Medicine Hat, will each receive a one-time grant of $25,000. The $200,000 increase in funding brings the government’s total spending for youth emergency shelters to $4 million in 2008-09.
“The additional funds will allow shelter staff to dedicate more time and resources to the youth they support,” said Tarchuk.
Improving access to existing programs for high-risk youth is a mandated priority for Children and Youth Services and part of the government’s commitment to provide services that support the most vulnerable people in Alberta.
Children and Youth Services and Housing and Urban Affairs are also currently reviewing how the government and communities can work together to better support these youth in the future.
