Board members selected to govern new Travel Alberta corporation

Edmonton...
Seven Albertans have been appointed to Travel Alberta’s board of directors.  The province’s tourism marketing organization will be governed by the board once it is established as a legislated corporation on April 1.

“We sought members with expertise in a variety of disciplines and with a strong background in governance,” said Cindy Ady, Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation.  “I’m confident we’ve found the right mix of people to get the new Travel Alberta corporation off to a great start, and to help us emerge even stronger from the economic challenges the world’s tourism industry is facing.”

The members will have terms of up to three years.  Members can serve on the board for a maximum of three consecutive terms.  The new board members will join Chair Quincy Smith and Vice Chair Bob Normand on a transition committee until the legislation comes into effect in April.

“Alberta is a magnificent destination, and now we’re a step closer to building a stronger organization to promote it,” said Chair Quincy Smith.  “With the full support of Minister Ady, the tremendous business experience of our board, and the valuable input from Alberta’s tourism industry, we will give Alberta an even greater edge in the tourism market.”

Members of the board are:

  • David Bayne of Banff
  • Ruth Kelly of Edmonton
  • Bryon Dickie of Calgary
  • Rick LeLacheur of St. Albert
  • Jan Fisher of Red Deer
  • Sandra Thornton of St. Albert
  • Steven Glover of Canmore

Travel Alberta’s mandate is to promote Alberta as a world-class tourism destination.  Tourism in Alberta contributes more than $5 billion annually to the economy and employs more than 111,000 people.  Funding for tourism marketing activities will continue to be provided to the new Corporation by the Government of Alberta based on the four per cent Tourism Levy.
