Weekly newspapers recognized for Fire Prevention Week coverage
Edmonton... Nine weekly newspapers will be recognized by the Government of Alberta for their outstanding coverage of Fire Prevention Week (FPW) at an awards presentation during the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association Symposium in Calgary on January 31.
“Fire can be deadly, and it is through the media that Albertans can learn about the tragic effects of a fire and learn to take measures to ensure they don’t become victims,” said Ray Danyluk, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “I congratulate all newspapers for playing a crucial role in helping us teach Albertans, especially children, why fires are dangerous.”
From more than 50 submissions, the winning newspapers demonstrated creative use of their pages to promote FPW, which included a mix of local stories with information from the 2008 FPW Campaign Kit. Alberta Fire Commissioner Trent West will present certificates to the winning newspapers. Winners and honourable mentions for the 2008 Fire Prevention Week Contest are:
