Planning program helps students prepare for post-secondary
New CD-ROM provides virtual tour of options
Edmonton... Alberta students have a new resource to prepare for post-secondary studies as the province releases a new interactive CD-ROM they can take home. Using the latest in technology, students can link to important resources on a variety of topics at all levels of post-secondary education and training.
“The Learning Clicks program and the new CD-ROM describe an endless array of options for dynamic careers that can stem from the wide range of programs in our post-secondary system,” said Doug Horner, Minister of Advanced Education and Technology. “We’re giving students the resources they need to plan and prepare for their future. This is one of the best ways to invest in Alberta’s future.”
Learning Clicks is delivered throughout the province by 20 post-secondary student and adult ambassadors. Presentations focus on the first-hand experiences of the ambassadors’ learning journey and the benefits of pursuing a post-secondary education. The Learning Clicks package has a host of planning tools and materials to ready students for the transition to life after high school, including the CD-ROM, which can be used to develop an avatar, or on-screen profile.
The new CD-ROM provides students with an exciting, virtual walk-through of Campus Alberta, the province’s system of post-secondary institutions. The Learning Clicks program encourages Albertans to think about their future and how they can achieve their goals by planning for education and training beyond high school. The CD-ROM also showcases around 20 interviews with current students on topics such as finance, student life, expectations and the support they receive in their post-secondary environments.
“There are so many opportunities to customize your own post-secondary education - things that I didn’t know about in high school,” said Sonia Nijjar, a post-secondary Learning Clicks ambassador in the Edmonton region. “Our goal through Learning Clicks and the new CD-ROM is to increase awareness of all the post-secondary possibilities that exist for today’s youth.” Sonia is earning her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and Creative Writing and the University of Alberta.
Over the past year, post-secondary Learning Clicks Ambassadors delivered 905 presentations in 327 junior and senior high schools, and spoke with nearly 19,500 students. Adult Learning Clicks Ambassadors delivered 58 presentations to various groups, and spoke with over 600 individuals.
