Tarchuk looks to New York for ways to improve children and youth services

Edmonton...
Learning about innovative approaches to delivering services to children, youth and families will be the focus of Children and Youth Services Minister Janis Tarchuk’s meetings in New York from December 9 to 13.

While in New York, Tarchuk will meet with senior officials from New York City Children’s Services to discuss lessons learned in their implementation of an outcome-based service delivery system.

“We work closely with numerous agencies to deliver supports and services to Alberta children, youth and families,” said Tarchuk. “Learning from the experiences of other jurisdictions will ensure Alberta’s service delivery system is efficient, effective and based on best practices.”

Tarchuk will also meet with the Committee for Hispanic Children and Families to discuss their efforts to improve the quality of life for children living in New York City. The information gathered during this meeting will be useful in serving urban Aboriginal and immigrant children and families in Alberta.

In addition, Tarchuk will meet with officials from UNICEF to discuss early childhood development and child protection, and with Mosaic Services and Safe Horizons to speak with them about trafficking of women and children.

The cost of this trip for Tarchuk and one staff member is approximately $9,900 including travel, accommodations and meeting costs.
