Alberta FASD Conference to focus on community impact
Edmonton... Registrations are now being accepted for the annual Alberta Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Conference, being held February 12-13, 2009, at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton.
“FASD is one of the leading causes of preventable birth defects in Alberta,” said Children and Youth Services Minister Janis Tarchuk. “This conference will help people involved in supporting individuals affected by FASD, to develop strategies for prevention and find additional ways to make a real and profound difference in reducing the impact of this tragic disability.”
The theme of the conference, Promising Practices, Promising Futures, focuses on the latest developments in FASD prevention and treatment in Alberta and Canada. Participants will gain a better understanding of FASD’s impact on individuals, families and communities. They will also learn more about prevention strategies and supporting affected individuals in their communities. The conference is open to all professionals, caregivers, families and individuals interested in or impacted by FASD.
Approximately 23,000 Albertans are affected by FASD, which covers a broad spectrum of lifelong disabilities and brain damage caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. A person with FASD may require as much as $1.5 million in support and services related to health, mental health, social services, education and training, justice, addictions, and family supports throughout their lives.
