Province's annual reports highlight accomplishments of 2006-07
Reduced taxes, unprecedented capital investment among highlights
Edmonton... Tax reductions, unprecedented investment in infrastructure, introduction of the first greenhouse gas legislation in Canada, and creation of a cancer prevention legacy fund are among the many government accomplishments highlighted in the 2006-07 ministry annual reports.
“The 2006-07 ministry annual reports provide Albertans with a detailed accounting of how government is spending their money and what it’s accomplishing with it,” said Lloyd Snelgrove, President of Treasury Board.� “I would encourage Albertans to have a look.� I think they will be pleased with what they see.”
Highlights of the annual reports include the following:
- Reduced the corporate income tax rate from 11.5 per cent to 10 per cent, exempted more Albertans from paying health insurance premiums by increasing income thresholds, adjusted the personal income tax system to prevent inflation from increasing taxes, and raised basic and spousal credit amounts.
- Invested $4.7 billion in infrastructure, including $1.1 billion in municipal infrastructure support, and nearly $1 billion each in highways, healthcare facilities and education facilities.
- Introduced the Climate Change and Emissions Management Act, making Alberta the first province in Canada to pass legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity from large industrial emitters.
- Established a $500-million Alberta Cancer Prevention Legacy Fund to support cancer-prevention initiatives.
- Added 80 more frontline RCMP officers to tackle serious issues such as organized crime, and expanded the roles of Alberta Sheriffs to include traffic enforcement on provincial highways.
- Implemented the Drug-endangered Children Act to protect children exposed to a parent or guardian’s involvement in serious drug activity, such as drug trafficking or manufacturing.
- Introduced a new tuition fee policy that limits annual tuition increases to the rate of inflation.
- Increased the AISH living allowance to a maximum of $1,000 per month.
- Released the Alberta Traffic Safety Plan to reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries on Alberta roadways.
- Collected 2,536 unwanted firearms and 243 other weapons during a month-long gun amnesty.
- Provided $42 million to help build 553 affordable supportive living units throughout Alberta.
- Became the first jurisdiction in Canada to integrate facial recognition technology into driver's licences.
- Launched the Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service in Edmonton to allow landlords and tenants to resolve disputes without going to court.� The service is now being expanded across the province.
- Developed and implemented a plan to protect Alberta’s forests from pine beetle infestation.
