Build a Stronger Alberta

Alberta strengthens ties with China in education and research
Edmonton... Alberta and China have strengthened collaboration in education and science and technology through two new agreements, part of many initiatives being carried out by the Alberta government during a week-long mission in China.
"Alberta has been working with China since the 1960s, in areas such as agriculture, education, energy, culture and research," said Doug Horner, Minister of Advanced Education and Technology. "Finalizing these new memorandums of understanding highlight Alberta's friendly and productive relationship with China, as we embark on more partnerships in post-secondary development and cutting-edge research."
The first agreement, with the Chinese Ministry of Education, facilitates mutual recognition of credentials granted by both Alberta and Chinese institutions. This will encourage increased student exchanges between jurisdictions, and increase confidence among Chinese students and academics in making Alberta their destination of choice for international study. Chinese students already account for about 35 per cent of all international students in Alberta, which enriches Alberta students' learning by exposing them to a range of cultures and ideas.
The Alberta government, along with the Alberta Cancer Board, will sign a second memorandum with the China Cancer Institute, which facilitates the creation of joint projects for basic and clinical level cancer research and development of anti-cancer drugs and cancer treatments. The collaboration aims to help strengthen Alberta and China's cancer research communities and related industry by encouraging closer cooperation through initiatives such as scientist and researcher exchanges.
These announcements are key actions under Premier Ed Stelmach's plan to build a stronger Alberta. Other priorities for the government are to govern with integrity and transparency, manage growth pressures, improve Albertans' quality of life, and provide safe and secure communities.
